Hilton Head Island is one of the most popular golf cart destinations on the East Coast. South Carolina law allows golf carts on secondary highways and streets with posted speed limits of 35 mph or less, but with a catch: you must stay within 4 miles of the address listed on your SCDMV registration. For gated communities, the 4-mile radius is measured from the community entrance. The island's resort communities (Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, Shipyard, Port Royal) each have their own cart rules on top of state and town law. Golf cart rentals are a major part of the vacation experience here.
