If you have a 17-digit VIN, leave the brand on auto-detect.

What the Tool Can Decode Right Now

This tool is built around the safest, highest-intent cases. It gives exact results where the rules are documented and clearly labels lower-confidence results when a brand or numbering system is less certain. Use it as a quick truth check, then follow the next-step links for valuation, buying, title work, or insurance.

Club Car

Example: PH0901-123456

Exact year with broad DS, Precedent, Tempo, and Onward coverage

E-Z-GO

Example: A301 1338763

Year lookup plus model-family hints with tag location

Yamaha

Example: JW9-400101

Official classic, Drive, and Drive2 primary ID coverage

Evolution

Example: 202289123 or EV24-12345

Official year guidance for chassis serials that start with EV or 20

Cushman

Example: 881009-7324 or 3409258 G2015

Vintage tags plus modern serial/date-code support

ICON

Example: 17-digit VIN or i40 / i60L badge

Official model-badge recognition plus VIN-first year guidance

Star EV

Example: Capella or 17636020028

Official model-family recognition plus narrow legacy serial guidance

Where to Find the Plate by Brand

If the decode fails, the first problem is usually location, not the rules. These are the most common places to look before assuming the tag is missing.

Club Car

Example format: PH0901-123456

Primary: Under the passenger-side glove box or below the cup holder.

Backup: On pre-1981 carts, lift the driver-side seat and inspect the aluminum frame.

Most modern Club Car carts use a barcode sticker and encode the year directly in the serial.

E-Z-GO

Example format: A301 1338763

Primary: Inside the passenger-side glove box.

Backup: TXT models may also show the plate on a steel cross member behind the seat.

You need the manufacturer code on the plate, not just the long serial number. The plate location is often the fastest way to narrow Marathon, Medalist, TXT, or RXV.

Yamaha

Example format: JW9-400101

Primary: Inside the driver-side storage compartment on many G14/G16/G19-G28 carts.

Backup: Drive and Drive2 carts may place the label near or under the seat in the engine bay.

The first three characters of the primary ID do most of the work.

Evolution

Example format: 202289123 or EV24-12345

Primary: On the chassis frame behind the front wheel on the driver side.

Backup: LSV models also carry a standard 17-digit VIN.

Official Evolution support says the chassis serial starts with EV or 20 and the beginning of the serial identifies the manufacturing year.

Cushman

Example format: 881009-7324 or 3409258 G2015

Primary: Under the driver-side seat or on the shift lever console.

Backup: Some older carts show the plate near the emergency brake or along the driver-side rail, while many modern Textron/Cushman vehicles place serial labels inside the cab below the driver seat.

Vintage Cushman tags use a model-number-plus-suffix pattern. Modern Cushman labels often pair a 7-digit serial number with a separate manufacture date code.

ICON

Example format: 17-digit VIN or i40 badge

Primary: Under the dash, inside the glove box, or on the passenger-side frame.

Backup: Most LSV models also carry a 17-digit VIN.

Use the VIN when possible. Official ICON docs publish model badges like i20, i40, and i60, but not a public serial-to-year decoder.

Star EV

Example format: Capella or 17636020028

Primary: On the serial plate in the glove box on many current models.

Backup: Street-legal models also carry a 17-digit VIN.

Official STAR manuals say many current models use a glove-box plate with the serial number and manufacture date code, plus chassis numbers on the frame. Legacy Classic/Sport manuals also distinguish older 16- and 17-prefixed serials, but STAR does not publish a universal public year decoder.

VIN vs. Serial Number

17-digit VIN

A true 17-digit VIN is a standardized road-vehicle identifier. On golf-cart-style vehicles, that usually means a factory-built LSV or another road-legal vehicle class. Position 10 encodes the model year, and the VIN can be checked against the official NHTSA decoder.

Manufacturer serial number

Standard golf carts usually rely on brand-specific serial or manufacturer-code systems. Club Car, E-Z-GO, and Yamaha all do this differently. That is why a real decoder needs brand rules, not one universal formula.

What to Do After You Decode It

Frequently Asked Questions

Do golf carts have VIN numbers?

Standard golf carts usually have manufacturer serial numbers, not 17-digit VINs. Factory-built LSVs and road-legal vehicles do use standardized VINs.

Can I decode a golf cart VIN for free?

Yes. This page helps with the first pass, and true 17-digit VINs can also be checked in the official NHTSA decoder for manufacturer and equipment details.

How do I tell what year my Club Car is?

Modern Club Car serial numbers usually include the year directly after the prefix letters. Example: PH0901-123456 points to a 2009 cart.

Why is E-Z-GO harder to decode than Club Car?

Because the long E-Z-GO serial number usually is not the year key. You need the shorter manufacturer code to decode the year, and the plate location often helps separate Marathon, Medalist, TXT, and RXV families.

Can this tool identify the exact Yamaha year?

For many common Yamaha prefixes, yes. For others, it may narrow the cart to a model generation or year range unless the full official primary ID threshold is covered.

What if the serial plate is missing?

Treat that as a risk signal. Gather paperwork, check physical model features, and verify ownership before buying parts or closing a sale.

Can I use the result to value the cart?

Yes. Once you know the likely year and model family, the next step is to use the golf cart value calculator and compare the seller story against the decoded result.

Which brands are not fully supported yet?

STAR EV now recognizes current model families and some legacy serial breakpoints, and ICON now recognizes official model badges like i20, i40, and i60. Exact year on both brands still depends on a 17-digit VIN or paperwork. Other newer import-heavy brands remain guidance-first.
