South Padre Island Golf Cart Laws (2026)

South Padre Island is one of the top beach vacation destinations in Texas, and golf cart rentals are a major part of the experience. The city requires a $50 permit for all golf carts under Ordinance 10-24. Carts are treated as motor vehicles, meaning you must have a valid license, obey all traffic laws, and wear seat belts. The island-wide golf cart speed limit is 15 mph, and carts may only operate on streets with posted speed limits of 35 mph or less. Two areas are strictly off-limits: the Queen Isabella Causeway (the bridge to the mainland) and the beach itself, except for handicapped access with a displayed placard.

• Most residential and commercial side streets have low speed limits and are cart-friendly

• Rental companies handle the permit, registration, and equipment requirements. The cart you pick up should already be street-legal and ready to go
