Tremonton, Utah has adopted golf cart rules allowing travel on eligible city streets posted at 25 mph or less. The city recorder posted notice of Ordinance 26-24's passage on October 21, 2026. The attached ordinance states an October 20 adoption date and sets driver, passenger and lighting requirements.

Golf Cart Search compared the posted ordinance with Utah's golf cart statute. The city repeats the state's exemptions from vehicle registration, plates and driver licensing, then separately requires cart drivers to be at least 16 with a valid license, learner permit or equivalent privilege. Reading only the exemption paragraph would miss that local qualification.

Who can drive a golf cart in Tremonton?

Section 15-854 sets the minimum age at 16. A learner-permit holder must be accompanied by a licensed driver aged 18 or older, seated beside the operator if the cart is equipped for that, or immediately adjacent if it is not.

The state-law exemption and local qualification appear in separate provisions. Utah Code 41-6a-1510 exempts golf carts from the state's driver-licensing chapter while requiring municipalities that authorize street use to specify who may drive, which roads they may use and operating hours. Tremonton's Section 15-852 expressly preserves that local authority.

The ordinance also repeats state exemptions from titling, registration, plates and motor-vehicle insurance. It encourages owners to maintain liability coverage voluntarily. These provisions concern qualifying golf carts; the Utah golf cart law guide explains the broader state framework.

Which Tremonton roads are open to golf carts?

The 25 mph threshold applies to highways under Tremonton City's jurisdiction. The definition excludes state highways, interstates and county roads unless the city is the highway authority for that segment.

Section 15-853 separately prohibits cart operation on Iowa String Road / State Route 13, Main Street where posted above 25 mph, other state highways and streets posted closed to carts. Its higher-speed crossing provision covers a city highway, at an intersection, by the most direct route to an authorized highway. That wording does not supply a general state-highway crossing permission.

Sidewalks, pedestrian ways, multi-use paths, public trails and public parking structures are excluded. Park access has a limited exception for paved roadways posted at 25 mph or less to reach parking, unless a city official authorizes otherwise. Officials can also temporarily close streets or authorize temporary use under the conditions listed in the ordinance.

Can Tremonton golf carts operate after dark?

Yes, if equipped as Section 15-855 requires. The default hours are civil sunrise to civil sunset. Other hours require lighting that casts light 100 feet ahead and is visible 500 feet in front, tail and brake lights visible 500 feet behind, and turn signals visible front and rear.

Every passenger under 16 must wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet or DOT-approved helmet while the cart moves on a city highway. Passenger numbers cannot exceed the cart's originally manufactured seating positions; lap riding, standing and riding in cargo areas are prohibited. Our golf cart safety guide covers equipment beyond these local requirements.

Do registered LSVs have the same rules?

Section 15-858 preserves the separate LSV framework: title, registration, plates, insurance, required equipment and a licensed driver. It states a 35 mph road limit, with an intersection-crossing exception and authority for specific road restrictions. The cart hours restriction does not apply to a lawfully equipped and registered LSV.

The Utah DMV's LSV guidance independently confirms title and registration requirements. Adding lights or a windshield to a cart does not establish LSV status, as the ordinance and our golf cart versus LSV guide explain.
