How do I read a Club Car serial number?

In the manufacturer’s illustrated convention, one or two initial letters identify the model; the next four digits identify year and production week, followed by six sequence digits. Use the complete prefix directory for the model rather than a fixed total character count.

Does a Yamaha prefix give the exact year?

Not by itself. Yamaha’s historical bulletin lists beginning primary ID numbers by model year, so the sequence and variant matter. Its June 2010 chart covers through the start of 2011; it does not establish current Drive2 prefixes.

Is every 17-character identifier proof of LSV status?

No. Check the full VIN with the manufacturer and NHTSA, the manufacturer’s certification label, ownership documents and the actual state registration path. Identifier length or a successful decode does not establish compliance or permitted roads.

Can NHTSA search my ordinary golf cart serial for recalls?

Its vehicle-specific recall search uses a VIN or license plate. Use the manufacturer’s recall process for the complete serial and check relevant CPSC notices separately; a blank VIN result is not proof that the cart has no recall.

What if a serial or VIN label is missing?

Photograph the complete identification label before buying parts or a used cart. Record the cart's model, powertrain and every label field separately. A chassis serial, manufacture-date code, model number and road-vehicle VIN are different identifiers; do not substitute one for another.

The hyphen is a separator. The one-letter example and two-letter example do not have the same total character count. Ask Club Car or its authorized dealer to resolve an unknown prefix.

A decoded original model is not proof of the currently installed battery, voltage, controller or charger. Conversions can change those systems. Use installed component labels and the approved wiring/parts information before purchasing electrical parts.

E-Z-GO: use the exact generation's labels

The TXT Fleet Electric manual 633137-D, page 17, revised January 2019 and including a 2014 TXT 48 specification, shows label areas below the front driver-side seat, on the frame weld tube and on the driver-side seat-back-support crossmember. Its illustration distinguishes the serial/date-code plates and frame identification. It requests the date code, serial and vehicle model when ordering parts.

This is one documented TXT arrangement. It does not establish an inside-glove-box location or a last-two-digits year rule for every TXT, RXV, Marathon or current PIN. Send all label fields to E-Z-GO or its authorized dealer for the matching generation's interpretation.

A separate official example, CPSC recall 23-726 dated February 10, 2023, identifies certain 2021–2023 RXV/TXT PTVs and places their serials near the steering-column base for RXV and below the operator seat for TXT. Its affected-model/range/optional-USB-port conditions belong to that recall. Read the whole notice and follow its stop-use/charging instructions if your cart is included; this example is not a search of every recall.

Yamaha: prefix and beginning sequence

Yamaha bulletin 10-001, June 1, 2010, is a Yamaha-issued U.S. identification chart hosted by a dealer. It covers vehicles manufactured through the start of the 2011 model year. On page 3, the beginning primary ID entries for electric YDRE are:

Our comparison shows why JW2 alone cannot distinguish the four listed years, and why JW9 cannot represent every early electric Drive. Use the complete number and correct variant/chart. These are issuer starting values, not customer-unit examples or a verified rule for later 2012–2026 models. Get the matching Yamaha identification information for Drive2, utility and other versions.

For STAR, ICON, Evolution, Cushman and other brands, obtain the model's owner manual and manufacturer interpretation of its full labels. Do not apply an unsupported EV/year-prefix pattern or a vintage Cushman convention to a modern cart.

A VIN check answers a different question

Use NHTSA's vPIC decoder for a road-vehicle VIN and keep its complete result, including errors or missing fields. Resolve a mismatch with the issuer; do not invent omitted characters.

As a reproducible maker check, we queried NHTSA DecodeWMI for 5HD on October 10, 2026. It returned HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTOR COMPANY, INC. and Motorcycle. That prefix is not a Club Car maker identifier in this response. A three-character maker check is not a complete VIN or vehicle inspection.

VIN length and decoded maker/year do not certify an LSV. Compare the physical identifier with ownership records and the manufacturer's federal certification label requirements. Confirm the actual state title/permit path and permitted roads. A state does not necessarily offer a VIN assignment or retrofit-LSV route.

An actual missing-label problem

67triumphGT6's California owner report describes a used TXT 48 converted to six seats in 2021, supplied with a title and plates. During transfer, the owner reported being unable to locate a physical VIN plate despite a VIN on the title; they found seven-digit serial labels instead. We checked the thread October 10, 2026; its posting date is displayed relatively.

This is the owner's account, not our inspection or a documented final DMV decision. Matching some digits to a document did not resolve the reported identification problem. Before purchase, have discrepancies and missing labels resolved by the manufacturer and issuing authority; appearance or decoded digits alone cannot prove the ownership chain.

Check recalls through the right paths

NHTSA's recall page explains that its vehicle-specific search uses VIN/license plate and omits some small-manufacturer recalls, repaired recalls and other categories. Do not enter an ordinary cart serial as though it were a VIN or treat zero results as a complete clearance.

Use the manufacturer's recall lookup/contact process with the full serial and model. Also search CPSC recall notices for the brand/model and compare the notice's identifiers and conditions. Ask the authorized repairer for completion documentation where a remedy applies. Keep the label photos, source/decoder result, ownership papers and service record together.
